Sermon Notes

Chapter 1 is about Who We Are and What We Have… Our Possessions In Christ. Chapter 2 focus on Our Positionboth before Christ and after Christ enters our life

Truth Point:   Position determines Condition

Scripture Reading: Ephesians 2:1-7, ESV

Physically Alive ~ Spiritually Dead

What does it mean to be “spiritually dead”?

To be void of “physical life” is to be void of what is needed to interact and respond to the physical world.

Take all that and apply it to the “spiritual realm.” If one is “spiritually dead” they have no capacity for spiritual interaction, they are dead to spiritual things.

The word “world” in verse 2 is not about the globe we live on, but a fallen system of thinking, being, and acting.

Paul says that “spiritually dead” people are under the governing influence of a spiritually dead system of being… A system that has Satan at helm.

Vs 3 identifies the condition of those who are spiritually dead:

  • Driven by the
  • passions
  • of their flesh.

Acting out of the desires of the body & min.d

By nature are children of wrath.

…children of wrath…: What does that mean?

It means the “spiritually dead” are living under the condemnation of God, and unless something happens to bring them to spiritual life, God's condemnation will eventually fall upon them in full fury.        John 3:16-18

What is it that brings on such a fearful Condition?

The Position of being outside of Christ Jesus… of being devoid of the GRACE of God.

Physically Alive ~ Spiritually Alive

Perhaps the two most beautiful words for fallen man are those that launch VS4… But God

What does Paul say about God?

  1. He is
  2. rich
  3. in mercy.

Loves us with a great love.

How rich is His mercy?... How great is His love?  Romans 5:8

What is GRACE? – It has been defined as: God’s undeserved favor.

What do Mercy & Grace actually mean?

Mercy = God withholding what we deserve.   Condemnation

Grace = God giving what we do not deserve. Exaltation

Two Conditions:

  • Condemnation

Exaltation

What determines the condition?   One’s Position!

  • Outside
  • of Christ –
  • Condemnation

Inside of Christ – Exaltation

Question: So why bother?

VS7:…so that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.

Truth Point: Mark this down and in the coming days let it ruminate within you…

There is no question that God loves us, no question that our redemption is motivated by His great love. We are the beneficiaries of God’s love.

But at the end of the day, the greatest motivation God has in doing all that He does for us is so that His Glory might be put on display for all creation to see, for all eternity.

Wrap Up

So what is your Position today?

Are you IN Christ… If so then you have been raised up and seated with Him in Heavenly places… His immeasurable riches of grace and kindness are being poured out on you in Christ Jesus.

Give Him Praise!

Are you Outside of Christ… if so then you are held captive by the fallen system of this world, under the sway and domination of Satan and as such God’s wrath is upon you.

But, God brought you here to hear about His love and grace. He brought you here so I could invite you to come to Christ in Faith to receive his rich mercy and love

Will you come to Him?

Will you allow me to answer your questions?

Will you allow me to take God’s Word to share The Good News of Jesus’ victory over Satan, Death and Hell?  I pray you will.
